![]() He’s a fuckin genius! his speaking voice is admittedly hilarious but what it really comes down to is how crystal clear his persona is. Acaster is a master of his comedic voice, and that's the only voice he needs to be a master of in order to be the brilliant comic he is. Anyway, not sure how far that metaphor carries, but anyway. Sure, some hits that were produced with full bands sound great performed in different ways by different people, but some music the production IS the music - the magic is in the timbre of the synths or the scale of the reverbs. Or more specifically, it doesn't hold up when you play it on guitar. Someone else used a music metaphor, in regards to music vs lyrics, but I feel like it's more like taking a piece of music that's been produced or arranged for a saxophone, but then critiquing it when it doesn't hold up on guitar. When it comes to stand up, I think separating the joke from the comic is a bit reductive. Ultimately, they are great comics because they know what sounds funny coming out of their mouths - not someone else's. The genius of someone like James Acaster, and other great comics is that they really, truly know their comedic voice. If you like him for his delivery, then that should be completely fine as long as you're getting a good laugh, who cares what anyone else thinks? In my own opinion, I can't see the funny in him. ![]() I'm going much further than you when I say his delivery doesn't do much for me, but all this shows is that comedy is just as subjective as everyone says it is. Plenty jokes rely on funny and true comparisons, relatability, irony, shock, funny or unbelievable situations etc., and you can write just as much about that as you can about delivery.įor me it's like, "oh yeah, I get it, most people who say that they are giving out free bananas mean that all the ones they are giving out are free, why would we specify which bananas? hahaha, lol, very funny indeed /s" For me, there's nothing that his bombastic, cartoonish delivery can do to elevate the joke above its content. Delivery is very important, and just as important as the joke and vice versa. What you are saying is absolutely reasonable. I don't get why you're getting downvoted so much. Which is bringing me to more existential questions - does it even matter if his jokes on paper are not funny if they make me laugh? Is it okay if it's just his wacky delivery that makes me laugh? Does that make him a lesser comedian? If one of my own jokes is only funny when I do it in a weird accent, is it still a good joke?Īnyway, I'm prepared to get a reply that completely destroys my opinions as unenlightened garbage, so bring it on. Example the first minute or so of this.ĭon't get me wrong, I think he's funny, but I don't think the jokes themselves are amazing. Even the bits that have nothing to do with being British. I tried taking a few jokes of his and adapting them in an American accent for kicks (EDIT: I wasn't literally delivering his jokes I was trying to see if the concept was funny in an American context) and they don't really work. I think he's good.īUT, I can't help but think that a huge part of his humor is only because he says stuff in a British accent and delivers it in wacky ways. I have watched James Acaster's specials, and I like them. Please note: None of these are affiliated with this sub, we're just linking to them as a convenience.
